kuruvi movie review

Starring: Vijay, Trisha, Suman, Vivek, Manivannan, Malavika, Ashish Vidyarthi

Direction: Dharani

Music: Vidyasagar

Production: Udhayanidhi Stalin
Director Dharani's earlier project Ghilli with Vijay and Trisha was a blockbuster victory that had set some kind of fast paced mood, tempo and expectations about this duo in the minds of their fans. They entered the theatre this evening eagerly to catch this maiden production venture of Udhaynidhi Stalin's Red Giants Movies - produced Kuruvi. The secrecy shrouding the story of the film had also helped in escalating its anticipations to a barometric high.
Scaling high-rise buildings, bowing down to bullets elegantly, Kuruvi opens with Vijay in his best nonchalant style, sending his fans into raptures. If the same care and hard work that had gone into rendering a weighty build up for Vijay had also been employed in the story department, it would have been a Ghilli-like encore for this team. As it happens, Kuruvi flies short of Ghilli.

Vijay having to free his father and his colleagues who have been trapped as slaves under villains Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman forms the crux of Kuruvi. The director has attempted to ride on the twin horses of action and comedy, moving the film at a very rapid pace, while simultaneously depicting Vijay at his humorous best. However, his objective seems to be too elusive and the film sags at various levels.

Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman (Sivaji fame) are compatriots in the quarry business who have given out a contract to Vijay's dad,

Manivannan, in Cudappa, Andhra Pradesh. Diamonds that are otherwise only found in Africa are said to be located in this area, but the government issues a ban to excavate the place owing to the risk of earthquakes. But the baddies force Manivannan to go against the law and make him and his group bonded laborers. Manivannan challenges the villains that his son would avenge him once he learns of this. But Vijay, who is in Chennai, thinks that his dad has gone under cover due to debts and is hopeful of his return one day. Meanwhile, a cheque for 50 lakhs that Manivannan had issued as collateral towards the house, bounces-forcing Vijay to vacate their house. Vijay asks the landlords a week's time to pay back the money and sets out on a mission to Malaysia to find the person whose signature is on the cheque.

He travels to Malaysia as a kuruvi- one who is used as a runner to carry and bring back goods. There he runs into Suman's residence. A scuffle with him results in Vijay stealing Suman's diamond in a Zorro-like costume which leaves Trisha,-Suman's sister, in a mesmerizing trance. She promptly falls in love. Along with her brother, she lands in Chennai in search of Vijay. Each of them search, but with different objectives. How the lead stars reach their respective goals forms the rest of the story.

Producer Udhaynidhi has spent generously which is perceptible in the lavish sets, colorful junior artists, graphics etc. Dharani's favorite music composer Vidyasagar's tunes are already a hit and the melodious 'then then' number is a revelation, both visually and acoustically. Trisha is at her glamorous best. Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman

do not have meaty enough roles to prove their mettle. Camera work and editing is slick. Vivek, who accompanies Vijay, provides occasional comic relief.

If you go to see Kuruvi with lowered expectations, you may end up liking it. But those who are looking for big build-up sequences and large Ghilli-like payoffs - stay away.

Verdict : Kuruvi- a moderate flight

kollywood quaterly

Looks like the year 2008 hasn’t been a good start for the movies. A close look at the statistics reveal mixed reaction from the movie-going public. While big ventures failed to evoke the expected response at the ticket counters, the box office buzzed with activity - courtesy the shoestring budgeted movies.

An analysis of the state of affairs at the box office during the first quarter.

As many as 26 movies hit the theatres during the four months of the year 2008, both, big and small in size. Pongal witnessed half a dozen releases and sadly none of them received patronage from the public. Bheema and Pazhani joined the average league while the others sank without a trace.

sadhu mirandal movie review

Cast: Prasanna, Kavya Madhavan, Abbas, Karunas

Direction: Siddique

Music: Deepak Dev

Production: Alka Film Corporation
With an impressive track record of all hits and no misses in his film career, Siddique certainly has what it takes to deliver a successful movie in what he’s best at– comedy. Though a tad off from his usual turf, Sadhu Miranda is the director’s attempt at mixing a cocktail of comedy and suspense. His intelligence in scriptwriting oozes out of every frame, as does his prowess in executing a well-crafted script.

Interestingly, revealing the story wouldn’t mean spoiling the fun- for Siddique makes sure (save for a few logic-defying scenes) that he sustains the suspense with his clever, unmatched storytelling.Abbas and his brother rob a bank in broad daylight. The amount, Rs.20 crores, is part of a government fund deposit. In the process, the siblings accidentally slay the hero’s (Prasanna) sister who happens to be an innocent bystander at the crime scene. She’d been waiting at the bank for an educational loan. Now, after the bank robbery, to ease the risk of legalizing the mammoth sum, Abbas flies to the USA and employs illegal means to convert the money. He changes the money into dope and tries to pay for it in India using the help of his brother.

Meanwhile, predictably, Prasanna seeks vengeance for his sister’s death and abducts Abbas’ brother who guards the loot. He also dupes the brother and makes Abbas reap what he sows. This includes stealing Abbas’ crush, Kavya Madhavan, from him.Siddique knows his onions and has you guessing till the end with this convoluted but suspenseful story that’s just a little short of being above average. At times, it even feels amateurish. (This is probably because a fusion of comedy and suspense is difficult to maintain). For how many times have we stifled a yawn at scenes showing a beloved brother employing foolproof tactics to get the baddies who slaughtered his poor sister?

Prasanna steals the show with consummate ease, playing the vengeful youngster and naïve lad. He exudes charm and poise, announcing the arrival of another promising actor on the block. The role of a sophisticated bank robber fits Abbas like few roles have recently. Kavya tries to emote beyond just using her eyes expressively, but often fails in the process.Rest of the cast include Manivannan, Manoj K Jayan, Kotta Srinivasa Rao, M.S. Bhaskar, Karunas, Charlie, and Vayyapuri. Prathap V Kumar’s cinematography, editing by T. R. Sekhar and Gowrishankar are noteworthy. Gokula Krishna’s dialogues are funny in parts, crisp and clever in others. However, the music by Deepak Dev isn’t particularly good. Also, the intervals at which the songs come on seem to intrude on the story.

Counting out a few illogical scenes that stand out (although they are not eyesores), Sadhu Miranda is a movie worth catching if you are in a nonchalant mood to kill a few hours watching a Tamil suspense-comedy.

Verdict: Timepass, Siddique style

Its kollywood valentine

Our movies are obsessed with love. No one –scholar, film critic or film buff – has been able to say why. To someone not familiar with our cinema, it might look like the same love story is being narrated over and over again. But we know that our cinema contains myriad variations on love. And they aren’t all romantic love stories either. The transcendent love between God and devotee, filial love between parents and children/ brothers and sisters, and platonic love between friends has also been movingly explored over a century of Indian cinema. The black and white devotional classic Meera (with M.S. Subalakshmi), Pasa Malar, Mudhal Maryadhai, Five Star, etc have evoked different forms of love. So, remember that Valentine wishes are exchanged not just by lovers but also by family, friends, teacher and students and owner and pet.

Among the many romantic love stories told by Kollywood, some are milestones. Nenjil Oru Alayam , Pathinaru Vayathinile, Alaigal Ooivathilai Kadhallukku Maryadhai, Alaipaiyuthey, Moondram Pirai and Kadhal are just a few out of several unforgettable Tamil movie love stories. We’d also like to mention, for the record, some films about forbidden love – between student and teacher (Azhiyadha Kolangal) a fan and the object of her passion (Sindhu Bhairavi). Nine times out of ten, lovers on screen come together or fall in love because they find each other beautiful or charming. In Sindhu Bhairavi, K.Balachander gave us a more tangible reason: his lovers share a passion -in this case, a love for music. For classical singer Sivakumar and music aficionado Suhasini, it’s a meeting of minds, of two soul mates coming together. They complement each other perfectly: she is passionate about what he is passionate and recognizes his genius; he knows he has a true fan and connoisseur in her, a woman who understands his art, his needs and his passion. The tragedy, of course, is that he doesn’t find this in his marriage.

Ajith join hands with vijay

Ajith is a one of the few actors in Tamil filmdom, who speaks less and let his movies do all the talking.

An actor to reckon with in the industry with a huge fan-following, he is eagerly awaiting the release of Billa, a remake of Rajnikanth's yesteryear blockbuster titled the same.

2007 has been a wonderful year for Ajith with several awards, accolades and hits going his way. He won the Filmfare award for the best actor, conferred MGR award by the State government, 'Azhwar', 'Kireedom' hit the screens and 'Billa' ready to take wings.

In an enthusiastic mood, the actor called on media persons in Chennai Friday. Over to Ajit now:

On the pressure factor doing the remake of a Rajnikanth film:

“I was actually thrilled to work in it. No sooner we decided to do the remake of 'Billa', we called on Rajnikanth immediately. He blessed us to go ahead with the project, which gave us the courage. So there was no pressure factor in me.”

Whether 'Billa' was an attempt to step in to the shoes of Super Star?

Certainly not. Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan are role models for the contemporary actors. We can only emulate them. The idea to do the remake of Billa struck me a few years ago. It took shape only now.

On the plethora of remake movies and remix songs in Kollywood:

I was impressed watching the remix of yesteryear’s song Thottal Poo Malarum by A R Rahman. It struck me immediately that when a three-minute song can be retuned and remixed to become a big hit, why not a yesteryear movie.

Will he act with Vijay again?

No. We both are good friends. We have great respect for each other but have adopted different style and approach. There is only a healthy competition between us. There is little possibility of both acting together as we are busy with various assignments.

Next movie?

It will be for Ayngaran International. Choreographer Raju Sundaram will direct the movie.

Ajith join hands with shanker

Ajith has finally accepted to don the role of shankers dream project ROBOT.At first it was kamal
who was to do and later king khan who had accepted to act and produce the film.So finalloy the chance goes to the ultimate star who has not been able to proven his worth in recent times. How ever he is confident after the billa experiment.
Despite being the leading stars, Ajith and Vijay haven’t done any film with ace director Shankar, who has proved his mettle as a leading director with guaranteed success, handling big stars and big budget. Hence, acting in his film is a dream of many heroes.

It is believed that Ajith will come to Shankar’s film after finishing his next directed by dancer turned director Raju Sundaram. The coming together of the Ajith, who has a good opening despite his failures, and Shankar, a proven victor, could prove to be a deadly combination.

Oram po

Introduction:
Movie that takes kollywood to bollywood.might be a trend setter.i mentioned this word because you see only in bolly wood covering these areas of peoples life.A definite entertainer. The movie starring arya has been released very late than xpected.while its songs have created xpectations in audience mind. The movie looks into the world of a section of Chennai auto rickshaw drivers as realistic as possible. The approach by debutant directors Pushkar and Gayatri is refreshingly new, as they do not look at them from outside. They make a sincere attempt to look at their lives from within.

Plot:

Chandru (Arya) and ‘Bigilu’ (Lal) are close friends. Chandru is an expert in auto race and Bigilu, a mechanic is an expert in customizing the autos to run at a dream speed of 130 km/hr.Son of Gun (John Vijay) is the chief of rival group who wants to outsmart Chandru-Bigilu group. Chandru, the race champ tries to settle his dues for his auto through a race, which is almost a cakewalk for him. He and Bigilu challenge Son of Gun to a race. And the day for race is fixed.

Bigilu meanwhile introduces Chandru to his sister running a Biriyani shop. Chandru is attracted towards her daughter (Pooja), and woos her into his fold. The affair grows stronger and ends in sex. The care free auto driver however, is not interested in long term commitment and tells it on the face of the girl. Shocked Pooja curses him and moves away from him. The champion gets distracted on the D day because of the memories of his love affair and fails in the race. He looses his auto and later his dearest friend Bigilu, who comes to know about his affair.

The sub plot of the search for the missing diamonds by a smuggler adds flavour to the proceedings. The unpredictable and fun filled climax puts everything in order.

Arya looks credible as an auto driver but struggles to exude varied emotions demanded by various situations. His expressions are monotonous and hence tend to be boring. His expressions in the race and in wine shop sequences are impressive. He also scores in romantic sequences.

Pooja fits into the casual girl who serves Biriyani in her father’s mess. Her chemistry with Arya is good. She has enacted the romance, disappointment, and anger well.

Lal as an elderly friend to the hero gets a sumptuous role and does it convincingly. He handles the character with ease. John Vijay plays the villain cum comedian role perfectly. His presence lights up the proceedings and his handling of Nellai dialect is simply enjoyable.

Others including Vijay TV fame Jagan (Chandru’s friend), Ashwini (Chandru’s sister), and Nellai Siva are competent. The debutant director duo has avoided melodrama and sentiments. The narration is simple and smooth. The turning points are convincing. The script has avoided the routine sequences one could expect from this kind of stories. The separation and reunion of Lal and Arya are handled well.

The story has many threads like the financial problems of the protagonist, his casual love affair, the race, the tug of war between two groups, the diamond mystery, and the ups and downs of the friendship between Lal and Arya. All these threads have been deftly put together to make a neat script.

MUSIC:

Music needs special mention in this movie. The music by G.V. Prakash Kumar goes with the tone of the movie. It is loud and entertaining. The background score add spice to the proceedings. ‘Nandavanathil’ song fits into the narration perfectly. The lyrics by Na. Muthukumar and the rendition by Manikka Vinayagam are impressive. The item song is enticing in terms of picturization and music as well. Alka Yagnik’s voice is mesmerizing.

PLUS:

  • Music
  • bigillu role
  • direction
  • stunts
  • T.R's song gam ganapathy
MINUS:
  • Son of gun is odd one out
Overall:
orampo a treat of entertainer.

Kalluri

INTRODUCTION:

Balaji Sakthivel, who has given us an amazing film 'Kadhal' is undoubtedly a good filmmaker. In fact he has been one of the trendsetters in the recent times for realistic films that defy the set rules. Kalloori, his latest offering under the banner of director Shankar’s 'S' Pictures, has reiterated Balaji’s mettle as a filmmaker who attempts to make meaningful movies.

KALLORI:

'Kallori' is a simple story told in a straight forward manner. It revolves around a group of friends. The portrayal of these friends with varied background provides you an experience of living amidst the circle. The various colours and shades of each person and the emotional ups and downs keep the movie going. The depiction of the sublime friendship is near perfect.

PLOT:

The film begins in a bus that has a lot of collage students heading towards Government Arts Collage in a small town. A set of friends are introduced as long term friends. There is a small build up to the introduction of the hero (Muthu played by newcomer Akhil), who is part and parcel of the circle. All are studying in the same class. They enter into the collage for the first time.

In the class room they see a new girl (Shobhana played by Tamanna), who is strikingly different from the lot. She looks fair. She looks sad. She is aloof. The group sympathizes for her and brings her into its fold. The girl soon becomes part and parcel of the group.

The movie goes on to narrate the collage life with fun and colour. It shows the strength of the friendship besides showing the backgrounds of the friends. Most of them are from poor background. The protagonist has an aim in his life. Being an athlete, he wants to excel in sports and get a good job through sports quota to give his poor family a new lease of life.

Shobhana, a rich girl from an upper caste feels for the boy and helps him achieve his goal. In fact every friend does the same thing but Shobhana does it with some sort of special attachment. Slowly the love develops in the minds of both but they chose to put it on the back seat for the sake of the larger friendship they share with the group. In fact the poor lovers don’t even share their feelings.

The narration moves on to a point when they are compelled by the circumstances to come out with their feelings but life has some other designs. Balaji Saktivel has remarkably recreated the collage atmosphere and the bondage between the friends. The script has deftly handled the struggle between love and friendship. No scene or turning point seems to be unnatural and contrived. He has amazingly extracted natural performances from the cast that is full of newcomers. He has thankfully avoided melodrama and clichéd sentiments.

He has executed some scenes with aplomb. The death in Saleema’s house and the game in the rain stay in our memory. The development of love looks natural. Balaji has worked well in minute things. The grandma of Shobhana sounds proud when she tells about her ancestors. She suddenly turns shy when she mentions about her husband.

The script however, lacks the excitement, which could keep the interest of the audience intact. Though the proceedings are natural and enjoyable, they lack an element that could hold your attention. The result is that you tend to see the movie with a laid back approach.

The climax is powerfully conceived and executed. The shocking mishap that reminds you a real life gruesome happened in Tamilnadu a few years ago. No doubt that it is credibly portrayed. But it doesn’t fit well into the script which moves in a different path right from the beginning. The climax has no answers to the questions raised by the proceedings. It actually evades the crucial issue of the struggle between friendship of a group and the love between two persons among them.

PLUS:

  • tamana done justice to her role
  • music
  • script
MINUS:
  • Logical errors could have been corrected
  • climax
Overall:
The movie is has natural narration, amazing visual quality, effective music and credible performances. The lack of excitement and the less convincing climax weakens the remarkable efforts of the director and his team.

nayantara smoking habbit

While gaining on the weight side, nayan let her vices take over her and eventually bring her downfall. She was recently seen at a Filmfare Awards party in Hyderabad throwing up. Friends took her to her house after the mishap.

Now to add to her list of problems, she seems to finding it hard to breathe having been smoking for so long. Her sensuous lips have gone black and her skin too her has been affected by this vice of hers. Her personal health advisors have advised against continuing her smoking habit if she wishes to top the actress charts in Kollywood. She is now struggling to come down from four packs to one pack a day.

Poor girl she doesn't know that her secret was not in how she looked but in her bubbly self.

Billa: a music review

Billa: will it release on 12th december?
on the other sides the over all songs also not satisfing as xpected except the fans.

While Don's Revisited and Chase Begins Again themes were phenominal, the rest of the song seems to be stock tunes from his earlier hit with Director Vishuvardhan (ironically, the one directing this remake) Pattiyal. Time-pass I guess.
So this is ultimate stars ajith much awaited movie BILLA
remake of rajinikaths movie of the same title starring nayantara, prabhu, namitha and many more leading artist of the kolly wood.

comments on billa songs:

My name is Billa ends up becoming a short remix with some unclear vocals of singer Naveen. It's a track that's still needs time getting used to. For that, we blame MSV. Not for his music, but rather our habitual growth with the SPB tune.

The other two tracks, Naan Muttum (a pale copy of "Yeh Mera Dil" [DON] and Sei, not being the "Aaj Ki Raat" [DON]. Just imagine Sunitha Sarathy or some pop singer with some techno jig and groove and bam, there's your filler tracks.

Sevval Kodi [Maurya Re] is proably the best track I've heard in this album. For that we must thank Vijay Yesudas for giving me the grace of de-grading this review. I'm not sarcastic. Great instrumentals!

With bated breath my favorite song of the 80s Billa was "Vethalaya Pothendi" by Malaysia Vasudevan [Their version of Khaike Paan Banaraswala.] Here's it's all jazzed up with some kuthu-ized percussion and there's your remix. Add in Shankar Mahadevan and subtract the "Vasudevan" out while shooting it in "Malaysia" (pun intended). Again, it's more or less gone the way of the recent Vijay flop movie Azhagiya Tamil Magan's hit track "Ponmagal Vanthaal." This also goes the same for "My Name is Billa."

In the end, Billa 2007 ends up being an average album. In comparison to this remake and Last year's blockbuster in hindi, the latter had some great tunes. Here's it's all re-mixed and re-jazzed instead of the "Stealthness" it Enjoy "Sevval Kodi" and "Theme Music" and forget the rest.
The trailler just rocks asof now.But will it reach the box office.God only knows?
