Kollywood takes the othereay

The East-West Resorts on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway could soon turn into a hotspot for film shooting – thanks to veteran actor Rajesh. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Rajesh said that his 34-acre resort has several facilities, such as swimming pool, gym, cricket ground, tennis court etc. Another added attraction is the lake that has been taken up on lease from the government where boating and fishing would be introduced very soon, the actor declared. It was also disclosed that the resort facilities are priced in such a way that it would be affordable even to middleclass families.

And for the film fraternity, the resort would be an ideal location for shooting. With the resort hardly a 30-minute drive from the city, it is expected that it would soon find a prominent place in the shooting location map. Moreover, plans are afoot to arrange all facilities required for film shooting at a low cost.

Those heading to the East Coast Road for entertainment could soon move towards Chennai-Bengaluru highway

give them a kick : Rajinikanth

The tenor of the stars, directors, producers and artists who spoke at the daylong fast protesting against Karnataka's objections to the planned drinking water project in Hogenekkal (on the border between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) was one of anger. Nearly every star who voiced his or her opinion spoke with great emotion and anger. To place the issue in context, here is a brief background to what led to the daylong fast. The Rs.13.3 billion Hogenekkal Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project, funded by the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), is expected to benefit about three million people in Dharmapuri, about 350 km from here, and Krishnagiri districts of Tamil Nadu. Karnataka, which is headed for assembly polls next month, is opposed to the project and says its share of the Cauvery waters will be affected.

Rajini: Karnataka needs to be given a kick

At the daylong fast protesting attacks on Tamil movie theatres in Karnataka over the Hogenakkal issue, Rajinikanth spoke angrily. It was long ago decided by the Central government that Hogenakkal belonged to Tamilnadu, and yet Karnataka seems to pretend otherwise. “Should we or should we not give Karnataka a good kick for not letting us draw water from our own land?!” bellowed the Superstar.. Law and order itself seems to be in chaos in Karnataka, felt the Superstar. “I unequivocally condemn Karnataka for this reprehensible act of denying us what is rightfully ours," Rajnikanth said. He sternly warned politicians in Karnataka not to use this issue to gain political ground. The film icon warned Karnataka politicians against using the issue for narrow political gains during the ensuing assembly elections.

Kamal Haasan: Karnataka’s responses and tactics are Primitive

As soon as Kamal arrived in Chennai, he headed straight to the place of fast and protest from the airport. Reaching the gathering at two in the afternoon, Kamal said it felt to him as though the whole Hogenakkal issue was being settled in primitive ways. Long ago, he reminded everyone, when our ancestors lived by the river, they fought over river water because there were no boundaries. Today we have boundaries and yet in Karnataka they don’t seem to really respect it.

Sarath Kumar: Rajini will give 1 crore, we will give 10 crores

Wherever Tamils are in danger, said Sarath Kumar, or are being harassed, we need to intervene. He also reminded everyone that Rajinikanth had once again said he would donate a crore towards planning a project that would find ways to bring water from all the rivers. Now, the Tamil Actors Association was willing to give 10 crores towards the same project, to find a viable solution to sharing these waters.

Vijaykanth: Our own waters are being denied to us

"Our constitution and legal tomes,” pointed out Vijaykanth, “have clearly said that no one on earth can stop an ordinary man's access to drinking water. And it is not as though we are stealing Karnataka's share of the water. The sad truth is that we are being threatened against using our water within our borders.”

Sathyaraj: Tamils are being victimized everywhere

It happened in Mumbai, Malaysia and now for the longest time in Sri Lanka, said Sathyaraj. He was referring to the way Tamils were being targeted as a minority group. Now it is happening in Tamil Nadu. This must stop at once

Tamil Film Fraternity’s resolution:

At the end of the protest and fast, the Tamil cinema fraternity took a joint resolution, assuring Karunanidhi that even if some of them belonged to opposition parties, over this issue at least they –the film fraternity - will stand firm in their support in the Chief Minister’s "fight to achieve justice for the people of Tamilnadu.”

kollywood quaterly

Looks like the year 2008 hasn’t been a good start for the movies. A close look at the statistics reveal mixed reaction from the movie-going public. While big ventures failed to evoke the expected response at the ticket counters, the box office buzzed with activity - courtesy the shoestring budgeted movies.

An analysis of the state of affairs at the box office during the first quarter.

As many as 26 movies hit the theatres during the four months of the year 2008, both, big and small in size. Pongal witnessed half a dozen releases and sadly none of them received patronage from the public. Bheema and Pazhani joined the average league while the others sank without a trace.

Its kollywood valentine

Our movies are obsessed with love. No one –scholar, film critic or film buff – has been able to say why. To someone not familiar with our cinema, it might look like the same love story is being narrated over and over again. But we know that our cinema contains myriad variations on love. And they aren’t all romantic love stories either. The transcendent love between God and devotee, filial love between parents and children/ brothers and sisters, and platonic love between friends has also been movingly explored over a century of Indian cinema. The black and white devotional classic Meera (with M.S. Subalakshmi), Pasa Malar, Mudhal Maryadhai, Five Star, etc have evoked different forms of love. So, remember that Valentine wishes are exchanged not just by lovers but also by family, friends, teacher and students and owner and pet.

Among the many romantic love stories told by Kollywood, some are milestones. Nenjil Oru Alayam , Pathinaru Vayathinile, Alaigal Ooivathilai Kadhallukku Maryadhai, Alaipaiyuthey, Moondram Pirai and Kadhal are just a few out of several unforgettable Tamil movie love stories. We’d also like to mention, for the record, some films about forbidden love – between student and teacher (Azhiyadha Kolangal) a fan and the object of her passion (Sindhu Bhairavi). Nine times out of ten, lovers on screen come together or fall in love because they find each other beautiful or charming. In Sindhu Bhairavi, K.Balachander gave us a more tangible reason: his lovers share a passion -in this case, a love for music. For classical singer Sivakumar and music aficionado Suhasini, it’s a meeting of minds, of two soul mates coming together. They complement each other perfectly: she is passionate about what he is passionate and recognizes his genius; he knows he has a true fan and connoisseur in her, a woman who understands his art, his needs and his passion. The tragedy, of course, is that he doesn’t find this in his marriage.

Madhavan to don sharukh khan

Madhavan is incisively known for possessing imitative traces of Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood films. Now he goes for the film that is a remake of yesteryear Bollywood hit ‘Yes Boss’. The film had Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla in lead roles and happened to a good blockbuster.

Selva directs film with KRG, President of Film Chamber producing the film. Buzzes are that Sameera Reddy has been approached to play heroine role for which she hasn’t come up with any reply. At present she is busy shooting for the film Vaaranam Aayiram starring Surya in lead role and directed by Gowtham.

Is shreya really sucessfull

Not much successful was Shriya in Kollywood until Sivaji elevated her to unexpected heights. It was all a sort of miracle as she paired up with leading stars Rajnikanth, Vijay and now Vikram in Kandasamy. Well, Sivaji could have been the reason for her to get opted for a Hollywood flick??

Fine! When we glimpse through her entire career and compare her with actresses, she has no specified USPs. Shaking her hips all the time with annoying facial expressions and overacting could alone would be USPs.

It was irritating to see her in awkward costumes and for her kind attention it is not glamour she comes up with. Moreover it looks vulgar..And now Shriya says, she is more satisfied with Hollywood and has no plans to set herself with Kollywood.

It’s all a blind miracle that has happened on her way…

Vishal's sathyam

After Malaikottai, Vishal will be seen in Sathyam which is a high budget film for the dark and handsome actor. For the first time in his career, he will be donning the role of an encounter cop for which he is reported to have had his training from a senior police officer to bring more authenticity to the character.
Sathyam

Nayanthara will be the lady lead for Vishal which has increased the expectations about the film in the industry.

Sathyam is touted to be an action film and stunt master Kanal Kannan is in charge of action sequences. Some time back, there was a report which indicated that due to some misunderstanding, Kanal Kannan had withdrawn from the film. However he is said to have reported for duty at the sets after things have been patched up. Sathyam also features Kannada actor Upendra in a significant role.

Ajith join hands with vijay

Ajith is a one of the few actors in Tamil filmdom, who speaks less and let his movies do all the talking.

An actor to reckon with in the industry with a huge fan-following, he is eagerly awaiting the release of Billa, a remake of Rajnikanth's yesteryear blockbuster titled the same.

2007 has been a wonderful year for Ajith with several awards, accolades and hits going his way. He won the Filmfare award for the best actor, conferred MGR award by the State government, 'Azhwar', 'Kireedom' hit the screens and 'Billa' ready to take wings.

In an enthusiastic mood, the actor called on media persons in Chennai Friday. Over to Ajit now:

On the pressure factor doing the remake of a Rajnikanth film:

“I was actually thrilled to work in it. No sooner we decided to do the remake of 'Billa', we called on Rajnikanth immediately. He blessed us to go ahead with the project, which gave us the courage. So there was no pressure factor in me.”

Whether 'Billa' was an attempt to step in to the shoes of Super Star?

Certainly not. Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan are role models for the contemporary actors. We can only emulate them. The idea to do the remake of Billa struck me a few years ago. It took shape only now.

On the plethora of remake movies and remix songs in Kollywood:

I was impressed watching the remix of yesteryear’s song Thottal Poo Malarum by A R Rahman. It struck me immediately that when a three-minute song can be retuned and remixed to become a big hit, why not a yesteryear movie.

Will he act with Vijay again?

No. We both are good friends. We have great respect for each other but have adopted different style and approach. There is only a healthy competition between us. There is little possibility of both acting together as we are busy with various assignments.

Next movie?

It will be for Ayngaran International. Choreographer Raju Sundaram will direct the movie.
