Yaradi nee mohini finally releases

Dhanush’s Yaaradi Nee Mohini is all set to hit the screens for next weekend on April 4th. The movie went through the scissors yesterday, exhibited to the Censor Board Officials, and awarded with a ‘U’ certificate without recommendation for any cuts for its acceptable content suitable for family viewing.Riding high on the success wave of the last year Deepavali release Polladhavan, Dhanush will try his chemistry with Nayanthara for the first time in Yaaradi. The movie is a Telugu remake, directed originally by Selva Raghavan starring Venkatesh and Trisha. It is also significant to note that Trisha won the MAA TV awards for her performance in the movie.

Yaaradi is directed by Selva’s Assistant Jawahar and produced by R.K.Productions. Yuvan Shankar Raja scores for the movie.

Kuruvi secret comes to an end

Director Dharani who has an imposing track record for delivering fast paced entertainers is back in action once again with the Ghilli team that set the screens on fire a few years ago. Kuruvi with Vijay, Trisha, Vidyasagar and a host of others will be a summer bonanza from Dharani. Kuruvi’s story appears to be a highly guarded secret and it was very difficult to find a small crack into this invincible wall of secrecy. But there appears to be light albeit a very dim one at the end of the tunnel!

A small trickle of secret suggests that the name of Vijay in the film is Guru Vijay who is called Guru V for short which explains the title of the film. Secondly, people who are being used for illegal smuggling of things across the borders of countries are also called Kuruvi. This might throw some kind of light about the film.

Meanwhile Kuruvi crew will be off to the picturesque New Zealand to can duet sequences involving Vijay and Trisha in addition to the already shot scenes in various scenic locales. Besides these songs, there would also be an item number when Vijay would be gyrating with the hip Malavika.

All the best kuselan

Kuselan, the forthcoming film being directed by P Vasu with Super Star in the lead role went on floors recently at Hyderabad. This film with Pasupathy, Meena and Nayanthara is inspired from the Malayalam Katha Parayumbol and will be wrapped up before Shankar’s Robot begins. Like any other Rajini film, Kuselan has also created much frenzy in the

Kuselan

industry and the media is abuzz with some kind of news everyday to satisfy Rajini’s fans. While looking at history and statistics, Kuselan has many intersting trivia to offer to the readers on why the film will be a super duper hit.

Rajini- P Vasu Combination

Superstar and P Vasu’s combination has worked wonders at the box office with the earlier films Mannan and Chandramukhi. The duo kept the audince entertained right through and everyone associated with the film was happy with the result.

Rajini with Meena

Meena who acted with Rajini as a child star in Anbulla Rajinikanth went on to become his heroine in Ejaman which recorded success at the box office followed closely by Veera and Muthu. This combination had earned the duo much acclaim not only in India but also overseas especially in Japan.

Rajini with Prabhu

The team of Boss with Prabhu has always been proving lucky right from the days of Guru-Sishyan. Their success streak continued in Dharmathin Thalaivan and later in Chandramukhi too. Prabhu plays perfect foil to Rajini’s antics and the duo has not failed till date.

Rajini with Nayanthara

Nayanthara after a couple of films in Tamil was lucky to sign Chandramukhi as the screen partner for super star and their chemistry was something that the press raved about. Nayan appered in the Balle Lakka number in Sivaji and their dance ignited the screen and sent the fans into a wild tizzy.

Rajini in Malayalam remakes

Rajini’s Muthu which was a blockbuster victory was adapted from the Malayalam Thenmaavin Kombathu and his Chandramukhi was from Manichithirathazh. Both have recorded huge success at the box office.

Going by these impressive track records, the combination of all these factors are anything but an indication of what is to come. Added to that, an impressive storyline to be complimented by actors like Pasupathy is expected to augur in a stupendous victory for Kuselan. All the Best Team!

Good news all around trisha

Trisha’s career is progressing on an enviable track with the right mix of commercial and quality films in her kitty. In Tamil she is busy with Dharani’s Kuruvi along side Vijay while in Radha Mohan’s Abhiyum Naanum, her role is said to be meaty with tremendous scope for performance. She is also committed to Gautham Menon’s Chennayil Oru azhaikalam where she will be playing a pivotal role with many newcomers.

In Telugu the success of Aadavari Maatalaku Ardhale Verule with Venkatesh has reiterated her position in the industry and the lady is all smiles thes days. Her happiness has increased further when Maa television had chosen her as the Best Actress for 2007 for her performance in AMAV. Needless to say Trisha is very excited about her feat and attributes it to Selvaraghavan who had offered her the role of Keerthi in AMAV. Congrats Trisha! May you win more such laurels in your career!

Anjathey villan on mood

His role in Anjathe as a subtle villain has won him accolades. Having started his career as comedy hero, director-cum-actor Pandiarajan’s move to accept this character was definitely a bold one.The actor, however, states that he was apprehensive that the audience would reject him, or even laugh at scenes that were supposed to be serious. But Mysskin’s ability as a director played a vital role in portraying Pandiarajan’s character to perfection.

Smitten by this bug, the actor said that he is fine with such roles but would not consider highly intense characters. To substantiate his stand he added that his mentor director K. Bhagyaraj had also acted as villain in two films – Kanniparuvathile and Vidiyumvarai Kathiru. Who knows? Another talented director and this comedian could even try out more serious villain roles..

surya and tamana pairs up for ayan

Ayan is the forthcoming film from A V M after the blockbuster Sivaji. This film will have Surya and Tamanna as the lead cast and will be directed by cinematographer turned director K V Anand whose earlier directorial venture Kana Kandein was much appreciated. Prithviraj who is making waves in Kollywood was introduced by Anand in Kana Kandein as the smart suave villain. Prithvi’s role defied the traditional image of villains in Tamil cinema but at the same time was successful enough in earning the wrath of the viewers. Kana Kandein was talked about for Anand’s distinct style in screen play and presentation.

Following his earlier path, Anand has plans to introduce a popular face as villain in Ayan and the unit is working doubly hard to find such a face. Anand says, “Apart from the main characters, Ayan also will be talked about for its villain. My film will satisfy the entertainment quotient but at the same time will lie well within the logical boundary”. Prabhu will be doing a pivotal role while Karunas and Jagan will be in charge of comedy track. Tamanna is slated to don a glamorous garb totally in contrast with her Kalloori image

Ameer well felicitated

Director Ameer has carved out a special position for himself in Kollywood with his meaningful films such as Mounam Pesiyade, Ram and Paruthi Veeran. Recently he brought home oodles of laurels when his film Paruthi Veeran won a ‘special mention’ award at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. His earlier film Ram had also won an award at the Cyprus Film festival.

Hence to felicitate his accomplishment, a function is scheduled to be held next week by the Cinema Press Club where Ameer will be honored. The event will be held at the film chamber auditorium. While talking about this function secretary Ramanujam says, “Winning an award at an International Film Festival is not something that is to be taken lightly. This function will be conducted on behalf of film journalists and I am very sure many such felicitations to honor Ameer will soon follow”. The event will be attended by the top brass of the film industry along with representatives from many film unions. I congratulate Ameer on his achievement!

Rajinikanth upset on kuselan

Kuselan went on floors recently at Hyderabad when the news of the sudden demise of Raghuvaran reached the sets there. When super star heard the news, he was shell shocked for words. Actually the association between Rajinikanth and Raghuvaran dates back to Manidhan days. From then on, the duo has acted in many films, sometimes on the same side while in some films on the opposite camps. Superstar was drowned in sorrow and could not come to terms with Raghuvaran’s death. The entire unit observed two minute silence to mourn the death of the versatile actor. Following this, on March 20th, Telugu actor Shoban Babu died while performing yoga at his residence. This news also upset the Boss who seemed to have no words to express his sorrow. Shoban Babu’s death was also mourned by the unit.

Surya to suceed the boss

What would Surya’s film be after Varanam Aayiram? Well, he has signed the dotted lines to star in Ayan, to be produced by AVM Productions. The customary pooja was performed at the AVM office this morning (24-03-08) to launch the film. K.V. Anand will don the director’s cap while Tamanna will share screen space with Surya AVM Productions had called for press meet at 11:30 am and surprisingly both Surya and AVM Saravanan were present at the venue at 11:25 am. Veteran director S. P Muthuraman hosted the show. AVM Saravanan delivered the welcome address.

Addressing the media, Surya said that he is happy to star in the very next film by AVM Productions, after Sivaji’s astounding success. It is to be noted that Ayan would be Surya’s second film for AVM after the smash hit Perazhgan that won him acting accolades.

kandaswamy in deep trouble

Kanthaswamy is in deep trouble… or should we say in deep waters? This Vikram-starrer had to be halted due to unanticipated rains that have been lashing Tamil Nadu and its neighboring states. The unexpected heavy rains have also brought Mollywood to a grinding halt. Sets worth crores of rupees were damaged and many shootings were cancelled. Moreover, theatres at Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Ernakulam, Kollam, and Azhapuzha have cancelled the night shows.

Mammootty’s Pazhassi Raja is the badly affected film, as the floods washed away a palace set erected at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. Kalabavan Mani’s film Swarnam had to be stopped when sets worth Rs. 7 lakhs was washed away near the Athirapalli waterfalls. Twenty-Twenty, a venture by Kerala Film Actors’ Association that stars Mammootty and Mohanlal along with a host of other stars, Jayasurya’s Shakespeare M.A., Malayalam and Prithviraj’s One Way Ticket are some of the other films that has been affected.

pappara mittai dhanush

Pappara Mittai, a story narration CD, which is a concept conceived by the Kalanjiam Trust, was released at a function held at Vani Mahal in Chennai. What is so novel about this CD is that it is for the children by the children. Children narrating the tales, which is in the form of music, adds attraction to it.

The album was released by Dhanush and music director G.V. Prakash received the first copy. Addressing the gathering, Dhanush said that in an era where grandparents have neither the time nor the creativity to tell tales, this album Pappara Mittai is definitely a boon. The actor added that he would take the CD home and listen to all the five songs in it with his kid.

G.V. Prakash also applauded the ‘by the children for the children concept.’ Being a musician himself he praised the idea of the CD being in a musical form. He said that it would increase the child’s thinking capacity. Kalanjiam Trust founder Munusamy Raviraj and Maithreyi Educational Trust founder Sridhar were present at the function.

director says no

Journalist-turned-director Adhiraj’s debut venture Silandhi, which has Munna and Monica in lead roles, is due for a release very soon. Silandhi has been attracting attention for quite some time now, more so with the stills of Monica in glamorous outfits. Added to this, the director has now canned an alluring song sequence with Monica dancing to the tunes of newcomer Neel Mukherjee.

When this news reached the distributors there was near scramble to obtain the Telugu dubbing rights, says reliable sources. However, director Adhiraj has firmly declined the offers stating that he intends to remake Silandhi in Telugu.

Is She also in the list too bad

Many top Bollywood stars are known to be smokers - Shahrukh Khan tops the list. He is known to be a chain smoker. Well, with all the pressure that actors face they need some rebate. I suppose smoking gives them that sigh of relief. But actresses smoking are not a common sight. And out of all the actresses that you could imagine who would smoke, the husky voiced babe Rani Mukherjee smoking would be the most unpredictable thing in the whole world but there you have it.

She has to have a cigarette every morning before kick starting her day. It apparently helps her answer the call of nature on time. But everytime her mom sees her with a cigarette in her hand, it doesn't go well with her and she has been on her case for along time to put down the cigarette. Well, she has tried but her efforts have backfired with side effects - as a result she goes back to the habit.

Now her mothers efforts to have her put the cigarette down have made her smoke in the bathroom - just so that she is not pestered by anyone about what she is holding in her hand. As an additional precautionary measure, she also makes sure that she has a good stock of mint and deodorant to wane off any "untoward" comment by her mom. She also makes sure that her cigarettes are well hidden.

Well, we all know that Rani is mature girl who has her head on her shoulders. She will do what she has to. She is a grown mature woman. Meanwhile I can't help but wonder does her husky voice come from the effects of the smoke that she is inhaling all the while.

mallaikallan

Malaikallan the film which created waves in Tamil Nadu in 1954 with M G Ramachandran and Bhanumathy cannot be easily forgotten by movie buffs. illena for 1.75

Ileana D’cruz the slim Goan beauty who made her presence felt in the Mahesh Babu starrer Pokkiri (Telugu) is currently rocking the Tollywood. Like most of the stars, she too started her modeling career before she shifted gears to film acting. She was seen in more than five Telugu films with popular stars and is committed to two other films which are in the making. In Tamil, she was last seen in Kedi with Ravi Krishna and Tamanna where she played the docile love interest of the hero.

Currently reigning the Tollywood, Ileana commands the highest pay cheque there. She has been aspiring to build a house in Hyderabad and settle down there. Her long cherished dream has come true now with the actress buying a flat for Rs 1.75 crores. She has also planned to have a massive house warming ceremony where all the leading artists of the industry would be invited.

old name is a problem

Remaking old movies have become quite common these days. But another trend cropping up now is naming new films with titles from yesteryear hits, even though the storyline may not have anything to do with the old classic- as in Polladhavan.

Some producers have apparently lodged a complaint against using their film titles to new movies at the Producers’ Council. The administrative committee deliberated upon the issue, and a consensus emerged that this practice should not be encouraged any further.

However, those intending to name their projects should obtain a no objection certificate from the producer or their legal heirs, declared Rama Narayanan, President, Producers’ Council

idaichellvi from kanimozhi

Social activist and Rajyasabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi released the CD and the first copy was received by Tamilachi Thangapandiyan.

Actor Sivakumar, writer Jeyakandan, and Ki Rajanarayanan were present during the occasion. Ki.Ra is much celebrated for his Karisalkaatu Kadudaasi and his wry humor in his works that reflects hardships of life in the countryside.

Bommarillu alise santosh suramaniam

Audio of the Jeyam Ravi starrer Santosh Subramaniam is slated to release on Sunday, March 23, 2008 and to give heads up to the media, the actor’s brother and director Raja called in for a media briefing at the Green Park Hotel in Chennai. Raja briefed the media about the remake – SS is the remake of the cult Telugu hit Bommarillu, incidentally directed by Raja’s former assistant director.

Addressing the media, Raja declared that it’s no mean task to remake a movie. “People think it’s as easy as falling of a log to remake movies, but it’s a very difficult task since the movie has already achieved a cult status. It’s like trying to redo a magician’s trick after seeing him perform. Luckily, we have got everything in place and I’m pleased with the output,” Ravi declared.

In his briefing, Jeyam Ravi stated that he plays the guy who leads a double life by being a quiet studious at home and a freak outside. For which, Raja was quick enough to interrupt and warn mockingly at Ravi not to let out the spoilers to the media. Prakashraj plays Ravi’s authoritarian father and the scenes between the two seem to have turned out convincingly well according to Ravi. Genelia retains her lead role for the remake.

kuselan latest

A rat race in bollywood

Doubtful starter, break even, average grosser, hit, super hit and blockbuster- these are the adjectives that we have heard about movies in the first quarter of 2008. Amusingly, some or many of these descriptions of degrees of success have been associated with the same movie over a period of time. First there was Taare Zameen Par which opened in late December. Well, the trade was all praise for the effort of Aamir Khan but they felt that Welcome would be the bigger draw. They were right, but only for a few weeks. Welcome jolted a few records, made huge amounts of money and gradually slipped down the ratings. Meanwhile TZP stood rock steady (much like Dravid ‘The Wall’), the collections never failing and slowly a movie that was first seen as a masterpiece that would find it difficult to sustain the crowds was entering the hit zone. But obviously that was not good enough and the movie stood firm well into February even after the arrival of Jodha Akbar, collections steadily balanced as the word ‘super hit’ began to be thrown around. Then came March and TZP was relentless in its assault at the box office, standing well in the top 5 in the current week, poised to touch the 60 crore mark and earning a blockbuster status.

Even Jodha Akbar has gone through a similar sort of run, though over a shorter span. When it released on February 15th it was hailed as a class effort but its viability was doubted partially due to its length and also due to some pestering protests in some parts of the country. But the class of Jodha Akbar converted all the doubts to one big unanimous applause as it walked into March sitting on the edge of a super hit status. So was Mithya, first considered as a niche multiplex comedy, the film has not created an earthquake, but it has certainly managed to outlast the period that was initially predicted for it in theaters. A top 5 spot in its fifth week speaks a lot about the caliber of the movie. The first quarter of 2008 was generously sprinkled with slow turtles that turned out to be winners, so what’s up in the second quarter.

A song that rocks chennai

You happen to hear a song, you sort of like it. The next time you hear the song you really like it. After a few more times of hearing it on TV, FM or just about anywhere, you are completely in love with it. Now what? You begin searching websites to download the song, or ask you friends for the song, to have it in on you desktop, mobile or iPod, depending on how many different places (and forms) you want the song stored in! In the process you find out that the song is from a year
released small movie starring newcomers. Obviously, this leads you to wanting to listen to the other songs in the album. Regardless of whether you like them or not, the movie and its stars are now familiar to you and when the movie finally releases you even watch it just for the song that you love. Ever wonder how Chitthiram Pesudhadi became a runaway hit? Well, this takes nothing away from Mysskin, Narain or Bhavan but one must give a lot of credit to Malavika’s item number (you know which one) Vaala Meenukku. One of the reasons you sat up and noticed the movie was Gana Ulaganathan’s song. We are, are we not, often in the habit of conveniently missing movies that don’t come with some kind of star attraction?

Have you heard- or at least heard of- a song called Nakka Mukka. Chances are that you have because it has become such a rage in all parts of Tamil Nadu. Not the kind of song that would conventionally top the charts but then it has caught on. And just look at what it has done to the movie, Kadhalil Vizhunthen. We are not declaring the movie a hit but it sure has a visibility that it did not have before - the much required fillip that can make the difference between a damp squib and a break even, may be even a minor hit.

Last year there was Jab We Met in Hindi. The movie was a well-made cute love story and it would have done well irrespective of the songs that it had. But take off the Mauja Mauja song from the end credits and you would have to admit that the movie would lose a bit of
its appeal. Even though the song was just an addition at the end with no bearing on the plot it gave the movie a lot of mileage after becoming a big hit in pubs and discotheques. Let’s take Bhool Bhulaiya for instance. Once again, a movie that stood tall on its own merits without much help from its songs. But it is also a fact that the ‘Hare Rama’ song has earned the movie a few extra crores. First used as an end credits song, ‘Hare Rama’ had to be included in the movie just before Akshay Kumar’s introduction because of its immense popularity and crowd pulling power.

Let’s come back down south. Think of Oru Thalai Ragam. What comes to your mind? The songs of course! The movie almost made history just because of the sheer brilliance of its songs and the moods it created. Take Karakattakkaran as another glowing instance. What Maankuyile Poonkuyile did to the movie, no other song has been able to replicate even after these many years. More recently, we can cite Unnale Unnale as the best example of how much music can help a movie grab the eyeballs of people. Most Hindi movies follow a pattern of launching their promotional campaign with a song video (preferably an item song), something even Tamil movies are getting good at.

The point is this: a song is that element of a film that can grab maximum attention in minimum time. One hummable line is good enough to set you searching for a particular song-the rest just follows. The pull of music is too magnetic to be overpowered by anything else. The talkie and action promos take time making dents in the people’s mind; music has a fast track.

In 2003, there was Thiruda Thirudi. You probably know what we are getting at. Manmadha Rasa rocked theaters all across the state to give Dhanush his hat-trick. Imagine Thiruda Thirudi minus Manmadha Rasa…… or let’s even say Boys without Maaro Maaro and Sa re ga ma…. Now it has to be accepted, music is not just an ornament in a movie- at least in India. Here, we love

My name is aegan

Choreographer Raju Sundaram is donning the director’s cap with his forthcoming film Aegan produced by Ayngaran International. Speaking about his first directorial venture, Raju spilled the beans about Ajith’s bearded look. “His character in the film is of a violent police officer capable of completing the task entrusted to him and required a beard for the tough look,” he said. “It is also something very different from the rest of his films,” said Raju.

The film was shot in Hong Kong, which is another initiative, for 15 days. Apart from this, plans are on to film song sequences in England, Australia and New Zealand. One of the fights has been filmed with the help of Jackie Chan’s stunt master. Nayanthara will share the screen space once again with Ajith and the other stars involved in Aegan include Suhasini Mani Rathnam, Sriman, Nasser and Suman.

Groundwork has begun for the upcoming superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan and Vasu seems to be on a signing spree for the rest of the cast. Looks like the Rajini – Prabhu combo will continue in Kuselan after the hugely successful Chandramukhi. The duo’s chemistry and impeccable timing in Chandramukhi has come in for widespread acclamation.Prabhu is likely to don the role played by Mukesh for the Malayalam original Katha Parayumbol.

Besides Kuselan, Prabhu has also accepted to play a vital role in Silambarasan’s Silambattam.

Sneha grabs silambattam

Having missed Silambarasan’s earlier invitation to star in Kaalai owing to lack of dates and prior commitments, Sneha has just grabbed the offer for Silambattam when it came along. The name previously in contention for the role was Kajal Agarwal who for reasons unknown could not honor the offer.

Silambattam will bring Sneha together with Silambarasan for the first time. Besides Sneha, Sana Khan also plays one of the leads. Silambarasan plays Vichu, a spiritual Brahmin lad and is said to don a double role for the movie. No price for guessing that Sneha will play the love interest of the conventional Hindu Brahmin Vichu!

Vaitheeshwaran movie review

Starring: Sarathkumar, Meghna Naidu

Direction: Vidhyadharan

Music: Srikanth Deva

Production: Annamalai Films Private Limited
The theme of rebirth and reincarnation seems to be reigning high in tinsel town now. First it was Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanthi Om, followed closely by Sila Nerangalil. The latest to join the bandwagon is Vaitheeswaran, directed by debutant Vidhyadharan.

The story is very simple. While on his mission to plunder jewels from a temple, Sayaji Shinde kills a small boy who happens to spot him. Being a witness to this dastardly act and at the same time powerless to counter Sayaji (because of his clout), the boy's mother vows that Sayaji will be killed by her son in his next birth after thirty years on a new moon day. The rest of the film deals with the fears and trepidations of Shinde, and how he goes about combating his death threat. Will Shinde be killed as per the curse?

Talking about performances, Sarathkumar as the psychiatrist has allowed the director to completely mould his performance. He looks much younger and has delivered a very cool and nonchalant performance. In fact among his recent releases, this film showcases Sarath in a fresh and revitalized fashion. Meghna Naidu seems to have understood what is expected from her and has followed a liberalization policy with her costumes! Her glamorous looks is one of the selling points of the movie. Manobala and Santhanam provide the comic relief while Sayaji has put in an earnest performance. As the astrologer, veteran Vijaykumar delivers the goods perfectly.

The pre-interval session of the film proceeds linearly on track, but the first twenty minutes post interval is a little grueling for the audience. However, the film picks up momentum soon after. Reincarnation is a widely debated issue, evincing varied opinions. But this aspect has been discussed in the film back and forth and the director's apprehension on which side to fall is clearly evident. A unique feature of the film is that the hero meets the villain only in the climax sequence. The twists and turns of the movie are enjoyable to an extent.

Srikanth Deva's music is ordinary. But what is different about the songs is that there are only two. Both songs feature a very sexy Meghna Naidu. Cinematography and editing are just passable.

Verdict: Go without expectations and enough time, you might enjoy it.

Finally a girl for the aegan

Putting to rest months of speculation and guess works, Ajith has finally officially announced the name of his baby girl. The baby is named Anoushka, a Sanskrit word which roughly translated into English means ‘one who fulfills desires and dreams’. Ajith sure has had a thing or two in mind while appropriately naming his girl so. Earlier, widespread grapevine suggested that Ajith addresses his girl as Joan.

Shalini delivered Anoushka in a caesarean surgery in the Apollo Hospital in the wee hours of January 03, 2008 at 01.30 a.m. Ajith was with Shalini during her labor and was also allowed to be present inside the operation theatre and watch the surgery with the doctor team.

Another face of a comedian :Charlie

When it comes to actors looking ever young that keeps you guessing about their age, the first few names that come to one’s mind is Sivakumar, Kamal and Sarathkumar. However there is one comedian who seems to have conquered the age barrier and has remained perennially youthful. And this is Charlie. From Kamal’s time to Vijay’s period, this veteran comedian has stood the tests of time and has stayed perpetually young and friendly to the heroes.

Charlie made his screen debut in K Balachander’s Poikaal Kudirai and has remained the ace director’s permanent fixture in most of his films. Another director who is very loyal to Charlie is Fazil and one can see the actor in at least a small frame in almost all his films. Charlie has more than 500 films to his credit and there appears to be a different facet to this seasoned actor besides brining comic relief to audience. Avidly interested in literature, Charlie has recently completed his M.Phill thesis and the topic that he had chosen for dissertation was ‘Contribution of comedians in the growth of Tamil cinema from 1937-1967’. An apt subject indeed!

Yuvan and selva

In Kollywood the young and energetic combination of Selvaraghavan-Yuvan Shankar Raja-Arvind Krishna had rendered films of excellent caliber like Kadhal Kondein, 7 G Rainbow Colony, Pudupettai etc. The trio even started a production house called White Elephants. The creative understanding that the triumvirate shared was revealed in their films and they worked in perfect sync with each other. Following the adage, ‘All good things come to an end’, cinematographer Arvind Krishna recently split with Selvaraghavan and Ramji has taken over his place in Selva’s camp as cameraman for Aayirathil Oruvan.

Meanwhile there appears to be one more break-up in Selva’s team and this time it is between the director and his musician friend Yuvan Shankar Raja. Grapevine reveals that the duo has been having some sort of differences of opinion which led to their separation. Now the music mantle of Aayirathil Oruvan has fallen on G V Prakash Kumar subsequent to Yuvan’s exit.

Its simbhus style

Having created a stir of sorts with his critically acclaimed and widely successful Imsai Arasan, Simbudevan is back with yet another wacky theme under the title Arai En 305il Kadavul. Ganja Karuppu and Santhanam play the protagonists and Prakash Raj dons the title role playing Kadavul. The movie will have Jyothirmayi and Madhumitha playing the female leads.

Although Simbu is not ready to reveal who is paired opposite whom, he was generous enough to let us know that this aspect forms the crux of the movie. “This would only be uncovered to the viewers during the course of the movie and the script is tact enough to keep the suspense and sprinkle it with generous amount of confusion as to among Ganja Karuppu, Santhanam, and Prakash Raj who will acquire the hands of Jyothirmayi and Madhumitha,” the director mentioned.

And we are sure Simbu has better suspense in the movie too.

Varanam ayiram :Sameera

She has been evading Tamil cinema or so it seemed, but Sameera is all Gung ho about the industry and Gautham Menon in particular. “I knew Gautham Menon even before Vaaranam Aayiram happened,” she started off answering for a question as to how it feels working for one of the best directors of Tamil cinema. “I was to be a part of Kakka Kakka, however, I could not make it due to lack of dates,” she mentioned through her dazzling smile.

She also spilled tit bits about the story and declared that Vaaranam Aayiram is not the usual girl meets boy love story. “You would have seen people fall in love when they first meet in the college, but, I fall in love with Surya only at the farewell day,” she chimed. Well, that’s something innovative. Sameera stated that she enjoyed every moment of being part of the movie since it’s a cute love story.

Will her role in Vaaranam Aayiram have shades of her bombshell tag that she acquired with hard work in Hindi and Telugu movies? Only Gautham Menon has the answer for now.

Vijay spreads his branch in kerala

Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay’s popularity in Tamil Nadu is a known fact but the young man’s charisma is soaring high in the neighboring Kerala also. His films are received with great response and record commercial success on par with any of the Malayalam film. Pokkiri crossed the one hundred day mark and Azhagiya Tamil Magan which received lukewarm response in Tamil Nadu met with tremendous reception there. Following this, expectations surrounding ‘Kuruvi’ the next release of Vijay with Trisha directed by Dharani is on the high and the film has been sold for 1 crore and fifty lakhs in Kerala alone. If sources are to be believed this is the first of its kind.

Meanwhile an interesting trivia associated with Kuruvi is that the agent who had supplied cars to the film shoot in Salem has absconded with 25 cars which was brought to the police notice by the car owners. Salem police has registered a case and are currently on the look out of the agent.

Is ajith my role model :surya

Following Tamil Nadu government’s concession on entertainment taxes for films with Tamil titles, viewers have been bombarded with Tamil titles of diverse nature. There is an encouraging trend of intense research before finalizing the title and it’s Tamilness in the industry. Recently Ajith’s film under Raju Sundaram’s direction was named Aegan drawing inspiration from Siva Puranam which means the one and only one.

Taking this cue, A V M films who will be producing Surya’s next film has named their project Ayan. Research on this name indicates that Ayan means Brahma who is the creator and one who stands out distinctly. The famous deity of Sucheendram temple is Thanumaalayan where Thanu stands for Siva, Maal for Perumal or Vishnu and Ayan for Brahma. A further exhaustive study of the word Ayan divulges different shades of the name and its meaning. In the documents registration parlance an Ayan document means that it is a perfect one with no encumbrance. From an astrological point of view, when a horoscope is Ayan, it suggests that it is an immaculate one.

Ayan has Tamanna lending the female support for Surya while Harris Jeyaraj will be scoring music. M S Prabhu will be responsible for cranking the camera while K V Anand of Kana Kandein fame is set to direct Ayan. Good luck team

kamalhasan

Kamal Hasan - one needs no introduction, though. Kamal is one actor the whole India is proud of. The debut, the personality, the versatility of skills, his films, the roles he played, performed and excelled, his achievements in every field he gets in are worth of appreciation, praise and are worth given an illustration. One has to consider Kamal as an actor, not an image because he just outclasses this so-called stardom and he feels and treats his profession as one of the fine arts. Kamal Hasan ia an actor of class, versatility and perfection who truly justified all the roles he did - from hero to villain, man to woman and a dwarf. Today, he is at a point where no one could reach him at all.

Kamal Hasan is a bridge between a lot of things. He doesn't fit in one box or a category or a classification. He belongs to no group in the Indian Film Industry because he has got his own style which is unique. All the roles in his films are either based on real life stories or from his own personal experiences and that make him live in whatever the characterisation he did and he lived in all the roles thus building a niche for himself as an alround personality in the field.

The greatest thing about Kamal Hasan is - he reached a point where one just can't emulate or imitate his dance, his delivery of words, his expressions, the way he presents and projects himself and above all, his acting capabilities and his skill which are a trademark.

After walking on Vani Ganapathi, he got married to actress Sarika who works as a costume designer for him in his films . In his films, the costumes designed from Sarika's galore are of such an importance that he looks just fit for the roles he plays in films keeping other actors out of his reach.

Kamal Hasan has not just acted in commercial films but in art films too - in fact, the number of art films are more than the commercial films that he acted in and all the glory he won is due in art films. Kamal works for no awards but for the cause of giving sort of an entertainment, joy and realisation to the indian population.

As a matter of fact, though he is there since his childhood, Kamal Hasan entered the industry as a classical dance director, then had his debut as a low-profiled hero maturing into an actor and finally turned out to be the producer-director-actor of historic movies, with the latest being "MurudaNayagam" which is believed to be in the final stages of making and released at the earlest. Kamal Hasan, thus in the long run, still remains and stands there.

Manisha koirala

MANISHA KOIRALA

NEPALI BEAUTY

Manisha belonged to the first family of Nepal. Her grandfather was the prime minister there at one time, and her uncles were also in power off and on. She was brought up in Varansi by her maternal grandfather. She was all set to study medicine but she stepped into the modelling world. From there she went on to do a Nepali film which brought her to Bombay's Bollywood. Her first movie was the inspid First Love Letter. She starred alongside Vivek Mushran in this romantic movie.

Subhash Ghai's ambitious Saudagar was her next movie. The movie starred Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar in a confrontational role. They played old friends turned bitter foes. Vivek Mushran and Manisha play their young children who fall in love and are instrumental in bringing peace back to the families. The movie had good songs like Ilu Ilu and was shot in scenic locations. It was a big hit.

Feroze Khan's Yalgaar also had several big stars, Mukesh Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Feroze Khan, Sanjay Dutt. Manisha played a young girl caught in vengeful crossfire between the families of a mafia-don and a police officer. She again plays a dovelike role of a harbinger of peace, similar to what she played in her first two films.

BIG LEAGUE

Manisha was in the big league already, as she had practically debuted with Subhash Ghai. But so far she had played the youngest sibling or the daughter of the house. She wasnt really a lead actress yet. She did some movies like Anmol with Rishi Kapoor, Insaniyat ka Devta with Vivek Mushran, and Dhanwan with Ajay Devgan.

Then Vidhu Vinod Chopra cast her in 1942 a Love Story alongside Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. Manisha played the daughter of a freedom fighter in the last days of the Raj in the idyllic hill station of Manali. Rajeshwari (Manisha) is spotted by Naren (Anil Kapoor) who falls headlong in love with the pretty girl. However, they come from different backgrounds, his father is a Raj sympathiser, her father is a freedom fighter, he is rich, she is poor. But they fall in love and overcome all odds to be together in the end. The movie was beautifully shot, Manisha looked fresh as dew. The movie finally bestowed the status of a lead heroine on Manisha. There were some lovely songs that featured Manisha beautifully, Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga, Rim jhim.

Manisha was in some indifferent movies like Milan, Sangdil Sanam and Dushmani. She starred in Mahesh Bhatt's Criminal alongside the southern hottie Nagarjuna. Although she was bumped off in the movie by the half time, she had some intensely romantic scenes with Nagarjuna with beautiful songs like Tum mile, dil khile, aur jeene ko kya chahiye. The movie was a big hit.

Then came Akele Hum Akele Tum with the then romantic heartthrob, Amir Khan. The movie had some good songs, but was not a hit. It was a tale of young lovers who let their personal ambitions come in the way of their marriage. Their love for their son brings them together. This movie featured the sweet song - Raja ko rani se pyaar ho gaya.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

Manisha's first movie with Shahrukh was a big washout. Guddu sank faster than the titanic.

Then came Mani Ratnam's Bombay. Manisha was a muslim girl here who elopes with her hindu lover. Later when they are embroiled in the midst of the Hindu-Muslim riots in Bombay, their children become the target of both the rioters because they could be either hindu or muslim. AR Rahman created magical music with 'Kehna hi kya', 'Tu hi re', 'Humma humma', and 'Kochi Kochi rukumma'. The movie was a big hit and critically acclaimed too. Along with Arvind Swamy, Manisha won accolades for her magnificent performance.

Agnisakshi was the indian version of Sleeping with the Enemy, with some modifications. Alongwith Nana Patekar and Jackie Shroff, Manisha again put in a great performance. This movie too, was a hit.

Khamoshi.lkc">Khamoshi was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie which depicted Manisha as a singer who tries to cope with life with her deaf and dumb parents who are trying to come to terms with the trauma of their son's death. She was paired with Salman Khan here. She had the bold role of a young girl who gets pregnant by her lover. It was a sensitive movie with wonderful acting by everyone, especially Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas who play the deaf and dumb couple.

In Hindustani, she was the love interest of Kamal Hassan and got to dance to sparkling songs like 'Telephone dhun me hasne wali'. With Kamal Hassan in a double role here, there was little left for Manisha to do.

ETHEREAL BEAUTY

In Rajiv Rai's Gupt, she was the heroine with Bobby Deol. Kajol played a negetive role here, while Manisha played the sweet damsel in distress. The movie was big hit.

Manisha was cast in Mani Ratnam's next movie, Dil Se. She starred again with Shahrukh Khan. She played an Assamese terrorist girl full of hate and venom against the Indian Government. Shahrukh spots her at the railway station and pursues her relentlessly across India. He awakens a spark of love in the heart of the hardened girl. Again the movie had some amazing music by AR Rahman, Chaiyya Chaiyya, Dil se, Ae Ajnabi, Satrangi Re. Manisha appeared in this movie without make-up and her ethereal beauty was well captured here.

ROAD SHOW

Kachche Dhage was a movie about two step-brothers who are forced to stick together and bond unexpectedly as they face troubles together. It had Saif and Ajay Devgan in the lead with Manisha playing Ajay's girl. The movie was a hit, and is still seen as a good movie.

In Lal Baadshah, Manisha attempted to seduce an aging Ambitabh Bachchan. He was going through a rough patch, and the movie sank. In Mann, Manisha paired up with Amir Khan to recreate a sort of an indian Titanic. But the movie did not sail through.

BAD SPELL

Though Manisha was getting a lot of work, her movies were not working. Hindustan ki kasam, Baaghi, Raja ko Rani se Pyar ho gaya, Chuppa Rustam, Lajja, Moksha all flopped.

RGV's Company had Ajay Devgan in the role of a bad Don. It marked the debut of Vivek Oberoi. Manisha played the spaced out moll of the Don with perfection. She has mentioned in one place that she yearns for roles like Escape from Taliban and Company which give her scope for acting rather than the dumb love interest of the hero.

Ek Chotti Si love story was mired in controversy. It was the story of a young boy who spies on a neighbour. Despite a promise of steamy scenes in the movie, there were none, and the movie fell headlong into the ditch of failure.

Escape from Taliban was about a woman stuck in the extremist regime wishing for escape. The role gave Manisha a lot of scope for performance and she acted very well. However the movie was really for a niche audience and not for mass consumption.

PRODUCTION

Manisha turned to production with Paisa Vasool with Sushmita and Manisha playing two bad girl trying to make money out of criminal activities. Despite being a funny film, it did not do well.

She also starred in Anwar, which starred her brother Siddharth Koirala. It was a bit arty, but a very good film with lovely songs. Aankhen teri itni haseen. It examined the hindu-muslim equations. Manisha had a small role in it at the end of the film, of a TV professional trying to climb up the corporate ladder.

Manisha hasn't tasted much success lately. She has some movies under production which might be promising.

GOSSSSSIP

She has always been known as the bindaas babe who lived life on her own terms. She never bothered to hide her smoking habit or partying ways.

At one time, she has also dated Nana Patekar.

She helped out Hritik Roshan when he was under fire from the Nepali People for making derogatory remarks against the Nepalis.

Right now she is engaged to Christpin Conroy, the ambassador of Australia to Nepal.

Srikanths new venture tuns good

Srikanth’s upcoming venture recently underwent a rechristening from Ettappan to a rather confessional Idhu Thirudiya Kadhai. Reason behind the name change is attributed to the objection raised by one of the closest kin of the historical figure Ettappan. Idhu Thirudiya Kadhai will also have a tagline ‘Aval Ullathai’ underneath the title.

First schedule of the shoots of Idhu Thirudiya Kadhai is on and Srikanth’s will have Navya Nair playing his lead. This would be Navya’s next film, who is in the process of putting down her roots in Tamil, after the recently released Sila Nerangalil.

Arrested house wife does not regrets

What if she is married and officially a housewife, the lovely looking Bhoomika hasn’t entirely bid adieu to her career. Although she isn’t satisfied with the roles being offered in Hindi and Tamil, Telugu seems to proffer what she wants. She plays the lead in a couple of Telugu movies. Bhoomika avers that she is looking for roles with substance similar to what Tabu plays in Hindi.

On the cards is a plan for direction. “It’s my wish to direct a movie by the end of the year. The subject would be offbeat as I have no interest in run-of-the-mill commercial movies,” chimes her. To be produced by her husband, the movie will be made in Telugu.Married to the yoga guru Bharath Takur, Bhoomika still follows the yoga routine that made her fall in love with her husband. “I turn to Bharath for doubts in yoga,” she states. Besides, she confesses that Bharath does not have a penchant to watch her movies. She also admits that she has no regrets whatsoever on that matter.

Rajinis jakkubhai is back

With Sarathkumar joining hands with K.S. Ravikumar, rumors on Jaggubhai – supposed to be made with Rajinikanth – are resurfacing again. However, Sarathkumar plays his cards safe and quickly clarifies that he has no clue on whether his project with KSR will dust and use the script of Jaggubhai. Will it hit on screens??????????

Preitys hopes and sharukhs butt

The lines between cinema and cricket are blurring by the day and soon there may be a time when we will be referring to them collectively as entertainment, not as cricket and movies. The second official auction of players contracted for the Indian Premiere League (IPL) was held and though most of the superstar cricketers had already been bagged earlier there was some excitement as the middle and lower level players were bought at prices that made cricket look like the most lucrative career option in future.

The big buys of the day were made by teams owned by two Bollywood igh fliers. The prize catch of the day in batting was certainly Salman Butt and he was taken by Shahrukh owned Kolkata Knight Riders for 100000 dollars. However the best buy, also the most expensive of the day was made by Preity Zinta’s Team Mohali, bagging Australia’s James Hopes for 300000 dollars, also on their shopping list was New Zealand bowling all rounder Kyle Mills. But the kill of the day was reserved for Emerging Media owned Rajasthan Royals who bought a handful of players including England’s Dmitri Mascarenhas. Chennai Super Kings had a low key day with just a couple of under 19 players being added while Hyderabad Nawabs took the day off.

Trisha found drunk again

Trisha who was in news sometime ago for allegedly drinking and creating nuisance in public has done it again and this time at a star hotel. The actress reportedly attended a party at a star hotel near Adayar recently and had a fair share of a unique variety of white wine. When she and her friends finally finished the party and decided to return home it was past midnight and the actress bumped into a fat lady just entering the restaurant.Eyewitnesses say Trisha apologized, but to everyone’s surprise the fat lady slapped her and used abusive language. As a crowd gathered, Trisha’s friends quietly escorted her from the place.

When Trisha returned to the hotel for another visit the hotel administration reportedly apologized to the actress for the rude behavior of the lady. However, they had asked her to leave citing security reasons. An adamant Trisha had questioned the hotel staff about the lady who had dared to slap her. The actress left quietly after knowing the identity of the lady.As it happens the lady was none other than the wife of a police officer who had caught Trisha on a couple of her earlier drinking spree and warned her against creating public nuisance. No wonder!

Fans expected movies this year
