Robo a dedcation to a man of tribute : Sujatha

I am deeply saddened and shocked by Sujatha’s death. So sudden, and so unexpected. And such a tragic loss for both, fans of Tamil genre fiction and film buffs. In his passing away, so many of Tamil cinema’s best talents have lost an invaluable and long standing collaborator: Kamal Hassan, Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Rajeev Menon and several other filmmakers and script/dialogue writers who must have consulted him on their projects.

Kamal has spoken of his indebtedness to Shankar for shaping his reading and literary tastes. Going by the various responses that are pouring in from people who knew him, what comes across is a picture of a writer who was modest and unworldly – rare indeed in the film industry. When Shankar would ask him how much he wanted as payment, Sujatha would invariably respond, “Oh, just give me something.”

It must be a particularly deep and personal loss for Mani Ratnam and Suhasini, and I can’t help wondering how they would respond to this tragedy. If they were to speak of it, what would they say? I just get the feeling that they were closest to him. And that between Mani and Sujatha it had been an intensely creative, vibrant collaboration that one of them will profoundly miss.

It is a spectacular loss for Robot – perhaps even a crisis. The absence of a script and dialogues by Sujatha would diminish any film, but in Robot’s case it is doubly true: for the movie itself, as we all know, is based on Sujatha’s cult novel. Who better than him to have seen the screenplay and dialogue through till the movie’s completion? But if some reports that are just coming in are to be believed, Sujatha had apparently completed Robot’s script and had handed it to the director saying, "Shankar, I completed my work satisfactorily. Hereafter, there is no tension to me, even the film will become as my last one!" Well…we don’t really know at this point, but if there is some truth to this, it is indeed reassuring for Rajini’s fans and the entire team of Robot.
About ten years ago Tamil moviegoers began noticing the name Sujatha on the opening titles of movies. First as dialogue writer, and then, as script and dialogue writer. Wait a minute, we wondered then. Is this the author Sujatha? The same Sujatha whose stories and novels we had been reading? The one who had made science fiction stories popular in Tamil and had imagined what Chennai would look like in post 2020? The answer, of course, was a resounding yes. It is then that I began to notice that a movie that had Sujatha as dialogue and co-scriptwriter was unfailingly interesting. Even if the movie didn’t always work, there was a freshness and inventiveness to the dialogues and the story. Also, a distinctly literary quality that could only come from a scriptwriter who was also the author of several popular novels and short stories.

To celebrate two of his best-known novels, Kanavu Thozhirsalai and Pirivom Sandhippom (Part I and II), Ananda Vikadan put up a giant cut out of Sujatha on Mount Road – the first time a writer had been honoured this way. He was not only prolific(100 novels, 200 short stories, 400 or more articles/columns and a dozen plays) but also broke new ground for the way he introduced genre fiction into popular Tamil literature.

Among the many early films he worked on were two Rajini movies, Gayathri and Priya-both based on his novels. And Kamal’s Vikram. Karayellam Shenbagapoo, Ninaithale Inikkum, Poi Mugangal and Vanakkathukkuriya Kathaliye are of some of the other films based on his novels and stories. Not many people know that his work has been adapted into several Kannada films (possibly because he used to work in Bangalore for a long time) such as Aryabatta, 24 Roopai Theevu, and Anitha Ilam Manaivi. His story about an athlete (Pathu Second Mutham) was made into a hit Telugu film starring Ashwini Nachappa, the famous athlete.

It is with Rajeev Menon’s Kandukondain, Kandukondain and practically every film of Mani Ratnam from Roja on (with the exception of Guru) and every film by Shankar, from Indian to the now bereft Robot, that Sujatha became a star dialogue and script- writer. It is well known that it was Sujatha and his wife who recommended Siddharth for Shankar’s Boys. They had seen him on the sets of Mani’s Kannathil Muthamittal as assistant director and thought he was perfect to play the lead in Boys.

Mani Ratnam was the first to notice his particular talent for dialogue writing, and for shaping a movie’s story in literary terms. Mani began collaborating with him closely, and the brilliant results were there for everyone to see on screen. Shankar picked up on this, and fused Sujatha’s ear for dialogue with Shankar’s own gift for grand storytelling. I also get the feeling that some scenes in Kandukondain, Kandukondain tap into Sujatha’s literary sensibility. What do I mean by this? I’m referring to the scene where Ash and Abbas have an argument over which the author of a certain passage is - Bharathi or Bharathidasan? You could feel the presence (and the contribution) of a Tamil writer in this wonderful scene.

Robot has been not only Shankar’s dream project but Sujatha’s too. He was very fond of both sci-fi novels that dealt with this theme. They had been widely serialized and read. It had also been adapted for television. It is the dream of any novelist to have her or his novel made into a movie. And every author’s fantasy that he would actually collaborate on the script, and even contribute to the process of making the movie. And for this versatile writer this fantasy had come true with the making of Robot.

And now what will Robot be like without its original creator? Who is to pen the dialogues? Or is it possible that Sujatha had already completed (or nearly completed) the script as some reports claim? Questions not just for us, but also for Robot’s entire team who must be anxious and grieving for such a heavy and sudden loss.

One thing I’m certain of: when the film is done and released, Shankar will surely dedicate Robot to the memory of Sujatha, the versatile, unworldly artist who brought Tamil literature and film together.

The cinematography for Billa by Nirav Shah so impressed Rajini that he wanted him to photograph Robot. Once again, Rajini was unerringly right: Nirav, who had virtually reinvented the way Tamil cinema could look in Billa, was the obvious choice. Nirav, of course, must have been thrilled and flattered. But there was a catch: he had already signed up to shoot Vishuvardhan’s next, Sarvam, starring Arya and Trisha.

The call sheets for Robot and Sarvam had coincided. Shah could have turned down Sarvam for Robot, of course, but he said he would not. Even though Robot is an epic project, involving none other than the Superstar, Shankar and A.R. Rahman, he would stay loyal to Vishnu. He and Vishnu go a long way back, he explained. They had been college friends, plus it was also Vishnu’s cinematic vision for Billa that had made their successful collaboration so talked about.

Robot’s new cinematographer is now ace cameraman Thiru. He once assisted P.C. Sriram, and now shoots for Hindi and Malayalam films. His previous work includes Hey Ram, Aalavandhan and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. His experience and expertise will surely make Robot special.

Ajiths next project with confirmed heroine

Aegan is the next upcoming film of Ajith after Billa being directed by Raju Sundaram. For the role of heroine, producers Ayngaran International have approached Nayanthara and there seems to be favourable response from her side. Dr Gayathri Sreekanth’s biography on Superstar Rajinikanth titled – ‘The Name Is Rajinikanth’ will be launched on March 6 at Taj Connemara in Chennai by Amitabh Bachchan.The book with 384 pages and 130 pictures is priced at Rs 495. The book published by Om Books International has foreword by Kamal Haasan, K.Balachander, AVM Saravanan and Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

Muruga doss new story

News about the rift between director Murugadoss and Gajini’s producer Chandrasekar made it to the headlines some time ago. It is said that Murugadoss promised the producer that he would direct another film for him as Gajini’s budget far exceeded its limit. But he was unable to stick to his word and as a result the rift between the two widened. To make matters worse, the producer

alleged that Murugadoss threatened him with dire consequences. He also lodged a complaint at the police station. With an impressive track record of all hits and no misses in his film career, Siddique certainly has what it takes to deliver a successful movie in what he’s best at– comedy. Though a tad off from his usual turf, Sadhu Miranda is the director’s attempt at mixing a cocktail of comedy and suspense. His intelligence in scriptwriting oozes out of every frame, as does his prowess in executing a well-crafted script.

Interestingly, revealing the story wouldn’t mean spoiling the fun- for Siddique makes sure (save for a few logic-defying scenes) that he sustains the suspense with his clever, unmatched storytelling.Abbas and his brother rob a bank in broad daylight. The amount, Rs.20 crores, is part of a government fund deposit. In the process, the siblings accidentally slay the hero’s (Prasanna) sister who happens to be an innocent bystander at the crime scene. She’d been waiting at the bank for an educational loan. Now, after the bank robbery, to ease the risk of legalizing the mammoth sum, Abbas flies to the USA and employs illegal means to convert the money. He changes the money into dope and tries to pay for it in India using the help of his brother.

Meanwhile, predictably, Prasanna seeks vengeance for his sister’s death and abducts Abbas’ brother who guards the loot. He also dupes the brother and makes Abbas reap what he sows. This includes stealing Abbas’ crush, Kavya Madhavan, from him.Siddique knows his onions and has you guessing till the end with this convoluted but suspenseful story that’s just a little short of being above average. At times, it even feels amateurish. (This is probably because a fusion of comedy and suspense is difficult to maintain). For how many times have we stifled a yawn at scenes showing a beloved brother employing foolproof tactics to get the baddies who slaughtered his poor sister?

Prasanna steals the show with consummate ease, playing the vengeful youngster and naïve lad. He exudes charm and poise, announcing the arrival of another promising actor on the block. The role of a sophisticated bank robber fits Abbas like few roles have recently. Kavya tries to emote beyond just using her eyes expressively, but often fails in the process.Rest of the cast include Manivannan, Manoj K Jayan, Kotta Srinivasa Rao, M.S. Bhaskar, Karunas, Charlie, and Vayyapuri. Prathap V Kumar’s cinematography, editing by T. R. Sekhar and Gowrishankar are noteworthy. Gokula Krishna’s dialogues are funny in parts, crisp and clever in others. However, the music by Deepak Dev isn’t particularly good. Also, the intervals at which the songs come on seem to intrude on the story.

Counting out a few illogical scenes that stand out (although they are not eyesores), Sadhu Miranda is a movie worth catching if you are in a nonchalant mood to kill a few hours watching a Tamil suspense-comedy.

If there is one thing Tamil movies can’t do without, it is churning out movies with love as a central theme. But director Ahathian has proved to Tamil filmdom that love is possible even in clichéd, shopworn circumstances with his Kadhal Kottai, which somehow made the subject of courtship and love once again suspenseful and interesting to a jaded audience. As the title suggests, Nenjathai Killadhe is a poetic love story subtly told. And yet it isn’t without all the inevitable melodrama that is a staple in our films. But even a realistic portrayal of love such as the one here can at times fail to strike a chord with the audience.

The plot revolves around a young couple with extremely opposite interests. Vasan is stinking rich and hunts for unusual experiences, while Anandhi, a documentary filmmaker, is equally rich. Their paths cross and they develop an interest in each other - alas only to play games with each others emotions, letting ego override love.Nenjathai feels like it’s revisiting Ahathian’s earlier love-hate-love version of the Prashanth starrer Kaadhal Kavithai. (Minus the plush London locales and an ensemble star cast, of course). No wonder it’s tough to stifle a yawn when the movie treads its way to being predictably boring. However, a twist in the climax makes up for this a little bit, although one can’t figure out what the director was attempting with such a climax.

Ahathian knows how to evoke empathy and he uses dialogue to do this. His dialogues resonate with the yearning and frustration of today’s youth. However, since they gobble a major part of the script, they, too, eventually prove to be one more source of tedium in the movie.Vikranth and Bharathi are a perfect fit for their respective roles and share an impeccable chemistry. Saranya as the mother is particularly good, especially in a scene set in a restaurant- when she realizes that Vikranth, the hero, is her stepson. Although Premji Amaran has scored seven songs, only Nera Varattuma Illa Kaadhal Anuppava sung by Prasanna and Mahathi is hummable. Yugendran’s background score doesn’t really blend with the flow of the movie and proves to be a drag in many scenes, save for a few.J.N. Harsha’s editing saves the movie from slumping too much. Cinematographer D. Shankar’s close-up shots are a delight to watch, as are the song sequences.

Ahathian’s Nenjathai Killadhe may not be for everyone; however, if you are the kind who likes reading a book on a quiet, uninterrupted afternoon, chances are that you might like it.

Any news, even a small one, about Rajini has always attracted great attention from all quarters. This time it’s about his next project for director P. Vasu, Kuselan. Currently, the music composition for the film is on at the Palmgrove Hotel, Chennai. Music director G.V. Prakash is said to have composed hundreds of tunes of which only two have been selected.This intense screening is probably to satisfy the superstar’s fans. Readers may be aware that Rajini’s fans threatened a music director some years ago when his music failed to create an impact.

The situation being what it is, not even the director is being spared this time. Rajini’s fans have been thronging P. Vasu’s residence to place their requests about how their idol should be portrayed in Kuselan. Vasu has assured them that their requests will be met. Amidst all this, the director has come out with a statement that Rajini’s role in Kuselan is not just a guest appearance as stated in the media, but that the Superstar will be seen in song and fight sequences.

Movies for april 14

April 14th has always been the best date for releasing movies in TN, because it was an auspicious day, and more importantly it is the summer holiday season when film makers expect families to flock to theatres. Be it our Superstar or any one for that matter, everyone has tried to position their film for an Apr 14 release to maximize the probability of ensuring good revenue particularly from family audience. That may have been changed for ever by three words - I*P*L.

IPL has conveniently scheduled the tournament from Apr 18 - Jun 1, ensuring that they take the full share of the summer vacation. Everyone will be glued to the TV sets over the summer vacation, thereby leaving the theatres empty during what has usually been the best time for theatres. I really feel sorry for the film making industry that they have to put up with the overkill of cricket at a peak time.

We are cricket crazy country and I don't think any effort can change the dates of IPL (I'm not against IPL, as it seems to put India on a bigger stage - only against the timing). I wish BCCI could be considerate and rethink the schedule for the coming years such that other entertainers get their fair share from providing summer holiday entertainment. Maybe the schedule could be starting from May18 - Jul 1, where they will still get a great viewership.

Close on the heels of the confirmation from Aishwarya Rai that she will be acting opposite Rajinikanth in Robot is the news now that she will not be part of Jhansi Ki Rani: The Rebel, Ketan Mehta's ambitious historical sequel to Mangal Pandey: The Rising..

Talking to the media, Ash expressed her disappointment over her being linked to the project. "Please stop dragging my name into Jhansi Ki Rani. Ketan spoke to me nearly two years back when he was very keen on making this film with me. But thereafter, he has not been in touch with me and I don't think that as of now I am working in Jhansi Ki Rani. So I would appreciate it if the media stops writing stories about me playing Rani Laxmibai." The actress further added that what she was most keenly looking forward to now was her Hollywood stint in Pink Panther – an enormous and nice change from all these Bollywood blockbusters.

Mysskins next project

Mysskin who made everyone take notice of him with Chithiram Pesudadi has proved once again with Anjathe that his success in the earlier film was no flash in the pan. He is exited about audience’s positive response to his latest film and feels indebted to producer Jhabhak who gave him the complete creative freedom to bring out what he wanted. When questioned about the cast in Anjathe, Mysskin avers that Prasanna was keen to do the negative role the moment he heard the script.

With Naren, of course, he shares perfect understanding. As regards Vijayalakshmi, her child-like voice made the balance tilt in her favor. He was also very happy with the supporting cast which made the film earn accolades.When asked about messages through his films, he states, “I believe in cinema being a visual medium and want to convey my thoughts through sequences rather than dialogues. As regards messages, I leave it to the audience to arrive at their own conclusion.” On his next film, he says that discussions are on with Vishal and things are yet to materialize.

Theatre closed

This afternoon police shutdown a movie theatre in Chennai. The Jayapradha Theatre on Peters road owned by former actress and MP, Jayapradha. The reason? Because a hefty corporation tax of 20 lakhs that had been pending had not been paid on time.The case had been appealed but this morning the verdict seems to have gone against the theatre staying open for business. The squad emptied the manager’s office of all the reels of all the movie cans. The theatre had been screening two shows a day: Paruthiveeran at 12 noon and the Telugu movie, Krishna.

First the fuss was all about Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan not getting along well. Then the entire issue was put to rest with the announcement that Hrithik would do an item number for Krazzy 4. No wonder this film has been grabbing everyone's attention right from the start.

To make matters even more interesting, another superstar has been roped in for an item number. Yes! It is none other that Shahrukh Khan. Now, the news is that SRK is doing this number free of cost. When probed, the response was: it is said that SRK is just reciprocating a favour extended by Rakesh. It may be recalled that Rakesh made a guest appearance in SRK's Om Shanti Om.

Interestingly, both these actors will be shaking their legs for the same song but, of course, different versions.

As part of Nepali’s audio release at the Sathyam theatre, invitees were treated to a song sequence. Everyone present came out feeling that the song was very special. It shows Bharath and Meera Jasmine in a sensuous song that has been tastefully and atmospherically shot. The tune by Deva is marvelously melodious and contemporary (a little unlike the usual Deva tune), the memorable lyrics are by Yuga Bharathi and the playbacks are Bombay Jayashree and Karthik.

There is an interesting prelude to the song: Bharath and Meera arrive at their dream house, a newly constructed flat that they are planning to move into. Bharath has brought her there to show the flat off, but before he can say anything, Meera beats him to it: “The bedroom will be here, the kitchen here, the study here,” she begins rattling off her preferences. “Please da, I want this first day to be as unforgettable as our first night.” A stunned Bharath says, “I’m not a talker, I’m a do-er,” and embraces her. The song begins.

After the screening of this song, director Parthiban came up to praise director Durai’s work. “There are some movies that leave us with a line that we don’t forget and keep repeating. In Ramana it was “Forgiveness is the only word in Tamil I don’t like.” Bhagyaraj gave us that line about drumsticks. After Nepali, people are going to talk about first day, not first night!”

Superstar back

Having been on a sabbatical from Tamil movies for sometime now, looks like Mammooty is all set to take Kollywood by storm with his Aruvadai. Directed by Aravind for Henry Pankaj Productions, Aruvadai will also have Arjun, Sneha, and Kalabhavan Mani playing vital roles. Rumors are also rife about Big B Amitabh’s cameo in the movie.With Aruvadai on the verge of completion, Mammooty has also okayed the script narrated by Sheik – better known as director Shaji Khailash’s Assistant. The project, to be shot in Tamil and Malayalam simultaneously and dubbed in Telugu, will be produced by Baburaja for JJ Good films banner.

Suman plays the villain and Sheik is busy these days holding discussions with Shreya, Namitha, and Sneha to fill the slot of the required three lead ladies in the flick. An official confirmation is expected anytime now. This project is likely to go on floors in the month of May.

Going by the intense roles Padmapriya has been essaying in Thavamai Thavamirundhu, Sathum Podaaythay and Mirugam, the Tamil movie industry seems to have wrongly typecast her as primarily a character actor than a glamorous star. “This is entirely the wrong picture,” the actress told a newspaper recently, reacting to such inappropriate typecasting. “Already in two forthcoming movies my role is glamorous, vibrant, sexy and colourful”, she added. She’s going to be a really happening heroine in Arjun’s Dhurai and there’s a Hindi film with Siddharth where she plays a bar dancer.

Glamour and sex appeal, feels this tall, talented, striking looking actress, there are beautiful things in a woman but only if presented modestly and tastefully. There are several projects in Malayalam where she plays both, character-oriented and glamorous roles. A.R.Murugadoss and Aamir Khan have managed to pull off a national level record for the highest distribution rights paid for a single movie yet! Yes, you heard it right: their Hindi Ghajini has garnered a whooping 90 crores in distribution price for its producers Madhu Verma and Allu Arivind.The Indian Film Company (IFC) has paid 53 crores to the producers of the movie for the domestic distribution rights. IFC had earlier distributed Jab We Met and Welcome, both of which have been profitable ventures. Overseas, satellite, online and home video rights collected another 40 crores.

This is quite a remarkable achievement considering the fact that not a single official still has been released about the movie yet.The movie is obviously heavy weight with Aamir fresh off his Taare Zameen Par success, A.R.Rahman as the music director (the inside story is that the director has composed some mind blowing music for the movie), Ravi K Chandran in charge of camera, and Murugadoss, one of the most commercially successful directors of the south at the helm. Asin plays the lead lady of Aamir, supported by Jiah Khan.Ghajini has managed to break the record set by Om Shanthi Om, which had collected 73 crores for its distribution rights.

Now for the really interesting side of all this: Aamir is not just looking to take away Shahrukh's record on the finance-side, but also on the physical side. He is gearing up to flaunt a six pack ala Shahrukh Khan. The actor is on a strict exercise regimen, building up muscles and pumping some iron.

Sultan the warrior, the animated film being directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth and produced by Ochre studios in association with Adlabs is shaping up at a fast pace. SRK challanges the BOSS

For some time now, Shahrukh Khan has been thinking of coming up with a grand scale special effects movie. Enter Shankar: who approaches him for Robot, his sci-fi epic. But after a few creative differences, the duo part.Shankar moves on, making his big project even bigger by roping in Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai, with the largest budget Indian cinema has conceived of so far.Now, Shahrukh responds by announcing that his Red Chillies banner plans to make the most expensive film in India with a budget of $25 million. Was SRK provoked/inspired by Shankar’s grand ambition?

While at the Berlin Film Festival, Shahrukh recently spoke to the legendary Hollywood trade magazine, Variety: "We are dedicating the next eight or nine months to taking the best technicians from around the world and asking them to help us make the best VFX film India has ever made. It will be madcap, over the top. I want it to be as beautiful as 'Spider-Man' in terms of effects,"The film is yet to be titled but we roughly know the plot: what happens when a bunch of children have all their wishes come true. Are wishes that come true always a good thing, or actually a nightmare disguised as a dream? The director of movies like Cash and Dus – Anubhav Sinha – will helm this mega project. What will excite VFX buffs is that Charles Darby, the man responsible for some of the special effects in Minority Report and The Matrix has been roped in. Apparently he has set up a VFX studio in Mumbai.

It will indeed be interesting to see what Shankar’s response will be. An even more grandly scaled movie than what SRK has in mind? After all, isn’t Shankar one of India’s initial special effects movie wizards?Such healthy professional rivalry will only help in the betterment of Indian cinema.

Yaaradi Nee Mohini, the Tamil remake of Aadavari Maatalaku Ardhale Verule with Dhanush and Nayanthara is complete and was set to release this week. However it may be delayed due to the introduction of a new song which is the remix of yester year hit ‘Paalakkadu Pakkathile’ in Vietnam Veedu Sundaram. Though the song is ready,the crew is waiting for the nod from Selvaraghavan who is the writer/director of the original Telugu version.

Director of YNM, Jawahar is an old student of Selva who feels that the film can be released only after his guru gives the green signal as he does not want any deviation from the original version. But Selva is in Rajasthan shooting for Aayirathil Oruvan and should be back in town after a while. Hence Jawahar has plans to wait till Selva sees and stamps his approval before it hits the theatres.

Paruthiveeran at berlin film festival

Berlin’s International film festival is currently being held at Germany where more than 136 films will be competing with each other to get a top berth at the festival. From India Ameer’s Paruthiveeran is the lone contender on a competitive level and Shah Rukh’s Om Shanthi Om has been chosen for a special screening.During the festival, Paruthiveeran will be screened for five days wherein three days it will be shown in German while it will be in English for two days. There will also be a special show for international press. Director Ameer has left for Berlin to attend the festival. Wishing Paruthi Veeran a grand success at the festival. Hope they bring home lots of laurels.

Shilpa turns a bond girl

It’s just possible that our collective long held fantasy of an Indian Bond girl could come true in Qantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond film currently in production. Olga Kurylenko will play the lead Bond girl, while the staple second Bond girl will be Gemma Atherton. But in a surprising new twist to the standard two-heroine Bond formula comes the likelihood of a third Bond girl! Shilpa Shetty.

That at least is the talk on most Hollywood movie forums. Her role is yet to be determined but her character’s name is known: Devi. After that little fuss in Britain, Shilpa is popular there. And then there was that small scandal with Richard Gere, bringing her to Hollywood’s notice. Quantum of Solace will release worldwide on 7th November.

JodhaAkbar :A complete review

This Friday the wheel of time will be turned as we revisit, through Ashuthosh Gowariker’s Jodha Akbar, one of the most eventful and fascinating pre-independence eras of our country: the splendor of Rajasthan and the opulence and grandeur of the Mughals. The film will also celebrate a very unique marriage that was at first just a political truce and later, an epic romance. With this epic film, Ashuthosh Gowariker gets ready to unveil his yet most ambitious project to date. It is not often that filmmakers find history to be a very favorable premise to construct a story that is commercially viable, especially characters that are very well known, popular, respected and even revered. Any interpretation, however sincere or genuine, will be questioned at some stage. So, first let us applaud the tenacious Mr. Gowariker and UTV for going ahead with a subject that was not without its risks. Let’s also save some applause for Friday, because going by the director’s track record and the amount of time and work that have gone into this project, it will be worth it.

The makers have said that Jodha Akbar is an epic romance, the tale of a young Mughal king’s unexpected journey towards the discovery of true love. If the movie is indeed a love story then it surely takes the credit for having the largest ever canvas on which a romance has been painted. And along with this, the rise of a young Akbar becoming the greatest Mughal emperor to have ruled our land has also been charted. All of us know a thing or two about Akbar, such as his great conquests that earned him the title Shahenshah (king of kings), his multifaceted persona, taste for art and Din-e-Ilahi, and his idea of secularism that still finds admirers. He remains one of the few, maybe the only Mughal king to be remembered both as a fierce conqueror and a just emperor.

So what is Jodha Akbar going to tell us about this great emperor and his life? Surely, everything that happened in his life will be too much even for Ashuthosh’s three hour plus style of film making. So, we have until Friday to go about guessing. History tells us that Akbar, when a young conqueror, chose to befriend rather than oppose the Rajputs, known for their valiance. And it was out of this alliance that the marriage of Jodha and Akbar materialized. This is where some historians are up in arms against the authenticity of the facts being presented. History is less fact and more speculation, and it is more the rule than the exception that every story of the past has a conflicting version. Here, we are told that Akbar and Jodha never married; but in actual fact, Akbar was Jodha’s father-in-law. History also says that Akbar had three sons, though we tend to forget two of them. The one we remember is Jahangir or Salim (as he was named by his parents). We are not too sure about what historians have to say about this, but that great Hindi classic, Mughal-e-Azam (which you have surely heard of) revolves around the love story of Salim and Anarkali, a court dancer. Of course, it is widely believed that Anarkali is a case of creative liberty skewering historical perspectives.

Who was Jodha? There are people who say that she was the wife of Jehangir and there are people who believe that she was the wife of Akbar and there are also people who believe that such a person never existed. The consensus here seems to be something like this: Akbar did not want to fight the reputed and valiant Rajputs, seeing that a political truce -fortified by matrimonial alliance- is the most peaceful way to unify two empires, he proposed marriage with a Rajput princess and won her hand. Jahangir who also married a Rajput princess kept this tradition alive. It was this princess who gave birth to Shah Jahan. The only real issue here is the name Jodha which some people think is more likely to have been associated with Jahangir than Akbar. But what’s in a name? When one of the finest and most daring directors in India comes up with a movie after painstaking research, we have but one thing to do: sit back and enjoy. There’s also Rahman’s music and the star power of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya (for the first time as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) to look forward to. And what better day for an epic romance to open than Valentine’s weekend?
